On November 1 - 5 in Kyiv, for the first time since Ukrainian independence a Social Week will be conducted. The form of such an event foresees an annual repeat with a new theme and new participants. A further purpose of the Social Week is to become a traditional public forum for the discussion of society’s problems and a search for their resolution, considering Christian, religious, and general human values. The theme of the current week is "On the way to the solidarity of Ukrainian society." Based on the century-old tradition of similar events in the world, the Social Week is called:
  • to strengthen the need for and deepen the understanding of solidarity;
  • to pay attention to the problems of vulnerable groups: the elderly, orphans, the mentally ill, and prisoners;
  • to support those who every day deal with social questions and to learn from their experience;
  • to stimulate the conduct of research, discussions and actions, both individual and group and also on the state level.
"We are convinced that it is precisely the lack of solidarity in society which lies at the basis of the permanent crisis in the state. During the Social Week we will propose considering how to return to solidarity the strength of values and virtue which are necessary for a just and peaceful civic life. We will also give a chance for practical acts of solidarity," the organizers of this event say. The key moment of the Social Week will be conducting on Sunday an act of solidarity (visiting a children's institution, an institution for the mentally ill, a home for the elderly, and prisoners in the Lukyaniv isolator). All those interested are invited to join in. The Social Week is being conducted under the patronage and with the personal participation of His Beatitude Lubomyr, Head of the UGCC.  A detailed program will be published separately.
