On Monday, July 18, the President of the Council of European Bishops' Conferences (CCEE), Archbishop Gintaras Grušas, visited the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Kyiv, and met with the Father and Head of the UGCC His Beatitude Sviatoslav. This was part of the CCEE President’s visit to Ukraine.

Archbishop Gintaras Grušas was accompanied by the Apostolic Nuncio to Ukraine, Archbishop Visvaldas Kulbokas. Metropolitan Borys Gudziak, Head of the UGCC’s Department of External Church Relations, also took part in the meeting.

While visiting the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, the CCEE President, accompanied by the Head of the UGCC, descended to the cathedral’s basement, where hundreds of civilians took shelter during the period of active hostilities around Kyiv (February-March 2022).

Archbishop Grušas also visited the crypt where His Beatitude Lubomyr Husar rests, and together with those present, prayed for his repose.

The CCEE President also visited the Patriarchal Center, particularly the synodal hall, which in the first days of the war became a social services hub, used to store and distribute humanitarian aid to those in need.

His Beatitude Sviatoslav recounted to his honored guest details of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church’s service during the war, and also noted the importance of his visit to Ukraine, so that Russia's war against Ukraine does not become a forgotten war.
