On February 28, 2013, Bishop Dionisio (Lachovicz) headed the Divine Liturgy in the prayer house of the Secular Institute of Catechists of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Prudentópolis (Brazil). Philomena Protsyk, Director of the Institute, invited Bishop Dionisio on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of his priesthood (8 December, 2012), the seventh anniversary of his consecration as a bishop (26 February 2006) and as a sign of gratitude for many years of cooperation and spiritual leadership, reported UGCC Press Service in Italy.

At the beginning of his sermon, Bishop Dionisio focused on the meaning of serving the Church, pointing out the service rendered by Benedict XVI. The bishop recalled the first words of the Pope as he took his office: “I am a humble servant of the Church.” And today, noted the bishop, in recognizing that he is just a humble servant and is not tied to power, Benedict XVI willingly resigns his position. He resigns because he is a servant. While he can serve, he serves; when he sees that his strengths are declining he resigns. This is in total adherence to the teachings of Christ: “I came not to rule but to serve and to serve and give my life as ransom for many.”

Then the bishop shared his reflections about his own priestly and bishop service, about obedience and placing oneself under the guidance of the Holy Spirit: “I can guarantee that my answer to the Holy Spirit throughout this service was always “Yes” and therefore I undertook all the challenges of this service.”

In conclusion, the Institute Director greeted Bishop Dionisio with the jubilee and expressed his thanks for cooperation over many years and for spiritual guidance.

“From the first years of your priesthood our Institute rejoiced in your friendship, solidarity and assistance. Numerous catechists grew both spiritually and intellectually due to your conferences, recollections, courses, major conventions, directives and assistance. I would like to note that throughout all these years and in all activities, be they personal or pastoral, we always were enriched by your sincere friendship, respect, good evaluation and recognition. For this we will always remain grateful. Our spiritual union with you will always remain alive,” stated Ms. Philomena Protsyk.

Note:

Secular Institute of Catechists of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was founded by Rev. Christopher Myskiv, a Basilian monk (*05.19.1905; +07.06.1973) in Prudentópolis (Brazil) in 1940. Father Christopher felt and understood the needs of the descendents of Ukrainian immigrants who settled in this territory. The period was historically and politically critical. Ethnic groups, immigrants and their ancestors were forbidden to use their native language in churches, schools and organizations. This pressure proved a big impediment for the Church in carrying out its pastoral care. Persecution and punishment could hit anytime. Therefore, Rev. Christopher, inspired by the Holy Spirit, decided to establish an organization whose members would in no way differ from lay people in their life style and who would be willing to mingle with the people and evangelize them.

Today the Institute is developing its activity in Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and the United States. More information about the Institute: http://www.institutoscj.com.br
