On March 17, 2009, at 13.00 the Vatican announced that His Holiness Benedict XVI, the Pope of Rome, blessed the decision of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC to designate Bishop Vasyl (Medvit) as auxiliary bishop of the Donets’k-Kharkiv Exarchate.

Bishop Vasyl was ordained a bishop on July 12, 1994, in Lviv. In 1994-1997 he was auxiliary bishop of the Lviv Archeparchy. In 1997 the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC appointed him Exarch of the Kyiv-Vyshhorod Exarchate with his see in Kyiv. He carried out this ministry until the transfer of the see of the Head of the UGCC from Lviv to Kyiv. In 2001-2005 he also carried out the duties of the Secretary of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC.

"I always wanted to carry out my episcopal ministry on the territories of eastern Ukraine. Therefore, after my medical treatment, when I was able with divine help to come back to a full-fledged ministry, I asked the Synod to appoint me for a task in this part of Ukraine." So Bishop Vasyl commented for the Information Department of the UGCC on his appointment.
