On March 21, 2011 in Lviv-Bryukhovychi Electoral Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church started which will elect a new Father and Head of the UGCC. Participating in the Synod, headed by the UGCC Administrator Most Rev. Archbishop Ihor (Voznyak), are 40 UGCC bishops from Ukraine and abroad (Western Europe, the USA, Canada, Brazil, Argentina and Australia).

At the beginning of the Synod, the Decree on convening of the Synod of Bishops was solemnly read. After this a special prayer to the Holy Spirit followed which was concluded by the oath read on behalf of all members of the Synod by the most senior-ordained bishop among those present – Most Rev. Basil (Losten).

"We are faced with a very important task: choosing the Head of our Church - said Bishop Igor addressing the Synod. - I believe that no confusion will be in our way, for we have faith in God in whom we trust. Of course, we and our faithful people keep praying and we trust that a good choice will be made. I am convinced that none of us is led by empty earthly motivations or predictions but all of us are eager to do our best to fulfill God's will.”

Thus the Gospel Book was solemnly brought into the convention hall. After this the first session of the Synod began during which the first voting took place.

Usually, it is necessary to receive two thirds of the votes to be elected. After twelve futile votes a Head of the Church will be elected by the absolute majority. When the requirement is reduced to the absolute majority, the number of candidates should be reduced to two ones with the most votes.

The elected person will have two days to accept or reject the choice. Rejection will lead to complete loss of these rights; however, the person can be reelected. The elected bishop will send his own letter to the Holy Father for approval of the election. When the approval is granted, he makes the confession of faith and swears an oath to assiduously fulfill his office before the Synod of Bishops. After the proclamation of his election, the enthronement of the new Head of the UGCC will be held in accordance with liturgical books after which he will be entitled to all the rights pertaining to his office.
