Head of the UGCC awarded Bishop Dionisiy Liakhovych with a Patriarchal certificate

June 29 at St. Sophia Cathedral in Rome on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of bishop Dionisiy Liakhovych, the Apostolic Exarch for the Ukrainian Catholics in Italy.

On this occasion His Beatitude Sviatoslav awarded the archbishop with a Patriarchal certificate.

Congratulating the bishop on behalf of the Synod of the UGCC His Beatitude Sviatoslav emphasized that the bishop’s service is an enduring staple of a sacrificial shepherd, who lays down his life for his sheep. “For thousands faithful of our Church who came to Italy in pursue of a better life, You became a good father, a devoted preacher of Christ’s truth, defender of their beliefs and liberties, especially in times of this church entity formation”.

For the record, bishop Dionisiy was carrying out a various pastoral work for Ukrainian diaspora in Brazil. In 1991 he came to Ukraine to revive philosophical and theological studies of Basilian Order. In 1994 he became a rector of Basilian Institute in Zolochiv and lector in graduate-level theological institutions.

In 2009 he was appointed by Pope Benedict ХVІ an Apostolic visitor to Ukrainian Greek-Catholics in Italy and Spain.

24 October 2020 Vatican informed that Pope appointed Bishop Dionisiy Liakhovych an exarch for Ukrainians of Byzantine Rite who live in Italy.
