“I tried to preserve the full freedom of the Synod, and I can confidently verify that by my oath. I am very satisfied with the choice of His Beatitude Sviatoslav, but I did not “work” on that choice as it is common for secular elections.” These are the words of the former Head of the UGCC (2001-2011), His Beatitude Lubomyr in an interview with the internet-based publication, the “Obozrevatel”.
Answering the journalist’s question if the Bishops’ choice of a candidate as the consecrated Head of the Church could be confirmed without a personal approval of His Beatitude Lubomyr, the former Primate of the UGCC said that he very purposely and directly avoided making any gesture or allusion that would, or could, affect the elections.   I was not present during the elections. I was with them only before when I addressed my brothers in episcopacy telling them my vision of what has to be done. It is true. But in no way did I confirm or anticipate their choice. I tried to avoid mentioning any names. In this way, the Bishops could think on their own, making their decision before God without saying: if you want this way, let it be.  Otherwise, it would become extremely dishonest on my part” – emphasized His Beatitude Lubomyr.   The Archbishop emeritus described the new Head of the UGCC as a very serious and hard-working man. “May God help him keep going on the same good road he was traveling until now” – said His Beatitude Lubomyr.  He expressed his personal wishes for His Beatitude Sviatoslav to avoid the temptations normal to a person endowed with power. He said, “It is not meant as an affront or insult to anyone, because each of us gives way to all types of temptations. And my wish, my solemn prayer, is that he would never fall into any temptation, even if they will be of different kinds… The prayer is exactly for this – exactly for support of such a person so that he won’t be blinded by temptations” – summed up his answer. This concluded the first interview to the internet-publication, “Obozrevatel,” of His Beatitude Lubomyr after resignation.   UGCC Information Department
