Note

Theodore Romzha was born on April 14, 1911 in the village Velykyi Bychkiv in Transcarpathia in the family of a railroad worker. He completed theological studies at the Papal Gregorian University in Rome.  In 1938 he became a pastor for the mountain villages of Bereziv and Nyzhnyi Bystryi in the area of Khust.  From the fall of 1939 he taught philosophy and served as spiritual father of the Uzhhorod Spiritual Seminary.  Soon afterwards, when the Soviet troops were already in Transcarpathia, on September 24, 1944, he was consecrated bishop. Since Bishop Theodore adamantly refused to cooperate with the occupiers in liquidating the Greek-Catholic Church and defended the union with the Roman Apostolic Church, the state decided to eliminate him.

On October 27, 1947, an army vehicle collided with the Bishop’s horse carriage.  When the soldiers saw that he did not die in the accident, they beat him and his co-travelers unconscious.  On November 1, when Bishop Theodore started to recover, he was poisoned in the Mukachiv Hospital by Sate Security staff.  He died as a martyr for his faith.
