"For me to be here among you and to receive such a high rank from the Lviv community, it is a special honor. When I was watching, who is among honored citizens of the city of Lviv, I saw that from now on I am in a very good company," emphasized Head and Father His Beatitude Sviatoslav on Friday, May 3, 2019 year, on the occasion of receiving the title of "Honorary Citizen of the City of Lviv" for his contribution to the spiritual development of citizens.

"I want to thank and congratulate you all on the fact that Lviv has such a beautiful holiday that coincides with St. George's Day. Easter joy gives some special charm and content for everything that's happening right here," underlined the Head of the UGCC.

According to him, Lviv has a special vocation for the whole of Ukraine. "Now it is not easy for our Church to get a place under the sun in different cities of Ukraine. However, it is in Lviv that we feel at home! This is our city, our land, our people. I want to especially ask the Almighty to allow all of us to fulfill our life mission, and to outline three good wishes as special features of the vocation of the city of Lviv. First: Celebrating the day of the city, in the context of the 100th anniversary of the restoration of the unity of the Ukrainian people, I want to emphasize that Lviv has a special mission against the whole of Ukraine," said the spiritual leader of the Greek Catholics. He is convinced that each of us must become a good citizen. To do this, it's enough to know and fulfill one's duties.

"Second: one of the modern scholar historians, Sergei Plokhii called Ukraine the Eastern Gate of Europe. And I believe that Lviv is the western gate of Ukraine to Europe. And it is so important to certify today, in particular - towards our western neighbors that Ukraine is Europe. And this too today belongs to the special mission of the city of Lviv," the Head of the Church explained the second wish for the development of Lviv.

Subsequently, the Bishop added: "And the third. I am convinced that there is no Europe without Christian roots. Otherwise, it becomes a social, political or business project, but ceases to be itself. And I think that the role today played by churches and religious organizations in Lviv in particular is a testimony that when we have solid, living, Christian roots, we will always and everywhere remain ourselves. May the Lord help us all to fulfill our vital vocation," said His Beatitude Sviatoslav.

It should be noted that, in addition to the Head of the UGCC, the title "Honorary Citizen of Lviv" was also conferred to the Metropolitan of the Lviv Orthodox Church of Ukraine, His Eminence Makarij, and the Honorable Patriarch of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine His Eminence Filaret.  The honorable Patriarch Filaret could not come to Lviv, so he would be awarded a distinction personally.
