Meeting of the delegation of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC with the Holy Father in Rome

On March 31 during a private audience of the delegation of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC with the Holy Father in Rome, the newly elected Major Archbishop of the UGCC His Beatitude Sviatoslav expressed his gratitude to the Pontiff for his confidence in confirming the choice of the UGCC Synodal Fathers. His Beatitude Sviatoslav assured His Holiness that the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church will be further cherishing unity with the successor of St. Peter.
On March 31 during a private audience of the delegation of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC with the Holy Father in Rome, the newly elected Major Archbishop of the UGCC His Beatitude Sviatoslav expressed his gratitude to the Pontiff for his confidence in confirming the choice of the UGCC Synodal Fathers. His Beatitude Sviatoslav assured His Holiness that the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church will be further cherishing unity with the successor of St. Peter. “This unity, - stressed out His Beatitude Sviatoslav, - has been sanctified by the blood of many sons and daughters of our Church.” During the audience Holy Father Benedict XVI and His Beatitude Sviatoslav discussed the current issues and challenges facing the Church in Ukraine and in the diaspora. The topics of their discussion dealt primarily with evangelization in post-soviet secularized society, enculturation in foreign countries where UGCC faithful are present, efforts for promoting Christian unity and social service of the Church. Benedict XVI assured everyone present of his prayers and support for the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church as it is entering a new stage of its development. The Holy Father had a short talk with each of the Synodal Fathers present at the audience and revealed a particular interest in the life of the UGCC in Ukraine and in the diaspora. At the conclusion of the audience, the UGCC delegation presented to the Holy Father a special gift – an icon of the Life-giving Cross made on glass.
