Pope Benedict XVI elevated the Apostolic Exarchate of Ukrainian Greek-Catholics in Great Britain to an eparchy

Bishop Hlib was born on February 23, 1954 into a Ukrainian family in Steubenville, USA.  He completed his theological studies in Rome, holds a license in biblical theology from the Pontifical Urbaniana University and a doctorate in Eastern liturgical theology from the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome.

In 1975 he took vows as a Studite monk at a Ukrainian monastery near Rome and in 1977 was ordained as a priest by His Beatitude Josef Slipyi.  For some time he served as a priest in the United States and in 1994 together with his Studite brethren came to Ukraine and served in various posts.

In January 2002 Rev. Hlib was appointed auxiliary bishop of Lviv and on 27 February he was consecrated a bishop.  A year later he was named Apostolic Visitator for Ukrainian Greek-Catholics in Italy and the procurator of the Major Archbishop in Rome; from March 2004 he also became Apostolic Visitator for Spain and Ireland.

On January 7, 2009 a new Apostolic Visitator was named for Italy and Spain, and on June 2^nd of that year Bishop Hlib became the Apostolic Administrator of the Exarchate of Ukrainians of the Byzantine Rite in Great Britain.  In two years, on June 14, 2011, he was named the Apostolic Exarch for Ukrainians of the Byzantine Rite in Great Britain.

The Apostolic Exarchate for Ukrainians of the Byzantine Rite was created in 1957 and in 1968 its jurisdiction was expanded to all Great Britain.  It is noteworthy that this is the only Catholic structure of the Eastern Rite in the United Kingdom.
