On May 26, 2013 in the Roman-Catholic Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin in the city of Encarnacion (Paraguay), Most Reverend Bishop Daniel (Kozlinsky) was enthroned as the Apostolic Visitator for Ukrainian Greek-Catholics in the Republic of Paraguay.

The ceremonies began with a solemn procession from the local Ukrainian Greek-Catholic parish of The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin in the Temple to the Roman-Catholic Cathedral where the Pontifical Divine Liturgy was held.  Before the Liturgy, Monsignor Mislav Khodzhych, Secretary of the Apostolic Nunciate in the Republic of Paraguay read the Decree of Pope Bemedict XVI appointing Bishop Daniel the Apostolic Visitator, and Rev. Volodymyr Fylypiv, pastor of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Temple parish, read a letter of greeting from his Beatitude Sviatoslav (Shevchuk).

The Divine Liturgy was headed by Bishop Daniel with concelebrants: Mgr. Ignatius Gogorzy, Roman-Catholic Eparch; Mgr. Mislav Khodzhych, Secretary of Apostolic Nunciature of Paraguay; and priests of the Ukrainian and Latin rites from Paraguay and Argentina.  Also attending the Liturgy were representatives of the Orthodox Church in Paraguay, the Sacred Heart of Jesus catechists, Sisters Servants, Basilian Sisters and a large number of faithful.

In his sermon the newly appointed Apostolic Visitator thanked Mgr. Gogorzy and all his predecessors for the pastoral care provided for Ukrainian Greek-Catholics in Paraguay.  He also emphasized the need for having one’s own hierarch, visitator, as well as the recognition of the necessities of Ukrainians in Paraguay and extending all efforts so that our faithful could see in their bishop a loving father.

At the end of the Liturgy Mgr. Ignatius expressed sincere gratitude to all attendees for participating in the Divine Liturgy of the Byzantine Rite, which was celebrated for the first time in the city’s Roman-Catholic Cathedral and expressed his wishes that Ukrainians not lose but preserve this treasure of Byzantine liturgy.  A celebratory reception and cultural program followed in the local Prosvita, a cultural-educational center.

Note:

The first Greek-Catholic priest Ivan Bugera came to Paraguay from Ukraine in 1947 and provided pastoral care for Ukrainian Greek-Catholics until 1968. Then Rev. Josef Rizinger, SVD, who built seven churches and served until 1992.  Their work is being continued by the present pastor, Rev. Volodymr Fylypiv, who has built three churches and provides pastoral care in the parish of the Presentation of the Blessed Mother in the Temple and in the nine chapels in the vicinity  of Encarnacion.  The catechists of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, who began their missionary work in Paraguay in the 1960s, have always and continue to greatly assist the priests.
