On Friday, October 18, 2019, Father and Head of the UGCC, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, had a meeting with members of the Humanitarian Policy Development Office, with the participation of Volodymyr Borodiansky, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports of Ukraine.

At the beginning, the Head of the Church described the principles by which the representatives of the religious part of civil society as a whole, and the UGCC in particular, are guided in their relations with the state.  These principles are: respect for freedom of religion;  dignity of the human person;  solidarity, and subsidiarity.  "The state and the churches are united by the fact that we are all human beings and, as a community, we act for the people, for our common good," said His Beatitude Sviatoslav.

Much of the discussion was devoted to the issues of freedom - both personal and social - since love for freedom is a particular feature of the identity of a Ukrainian.  The participants of the discussion agreed that the concept of freedom includes the concept of responsibility.  This applies above all to responsibility before God, before past generations (for our identity is created by our memory) and before future generations.

The participants of the discussion thoroughly discussed the issues related to the formation, resistance and development of the state organism.  It was noted that the State is always based on the concept of common good for the sake of which the people unite in the state organism.  Dialogue is a major community-building tool.  All institutionality is a derivative; the core is a community.  It must also be remembered that the family is an institution created by God before all other institutions, and man is a higher value than the state.

His Beatitude Sviatoslav also noted that for the present stage of Ukraine's development, the religious peace is the greatest manifestation of the common good.  He also answered numerous questions from the Office's representatives and shared his thoughts on the content of our national idea.

At the end of the meeting, the Head of the UGCC thanked the organizers and participants for their openness to dialogue for the search for truth and wished them a successful work.
