“Our Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church has preserved an everlasting tradition of spiritual care of Ukrainian soldiers over centuries, and this tradition is a live manifestation we see in the order today”, said His Beatitude Sviatoslav, the Father and Head of the UGCC on August 18, 2021 as he solemnly handed to the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War a unique artifact - “Golden cross of merit” of Fr. Andriy Pshepiurskiy.

The Head of the UGCC told that this unique family heirloom was passed down by Ms. Liubomyra, a great-granddaughter of Fr. Andriy Pshepiurskiy.

His Beatitude Sviatoslav reckons that this heirloom belongs no to the Church only but to our whole Ukrainian nation. It marks centennial fights of Ukrainians for their independent country.

There few reasons why His Beatitude Sviatoslav decided to pass this order specifically to the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War.

To begin with, this museum has already extended beyond the period of the World War II in their expositions. Besides, this is one of the most visited museums of Ukraine up to now. Even during the pandemic it is visited by over 1 500 people daily. Last but not least, this museum holds a serious impartial research work, and the life of Fr. Andriy might serve contemporary historians to explore historian periods of First and Second World Wars.

Hence, the Head of the UGCC invited scientific researchers of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War to collaboration with the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church to investigate the history of chaplaincy Ukrainian military formation.

Fr. Andriy Zelinskiy, deputy head of the Department of Military Chaplaincy of the Patriarchal Curia of the UGCC emphasized that one of the important steps that helped to prepare our priests to spiritual care was their formation. Since 2014, when this initiative was put forward by His Beatitude Sviatoslav, the Church has started a systematic work of developing military chaplaincy in modern history of the Ukrainian state.
