The UGCC Primate, His Beatitude Sviatoslav (Shevchuk), appealed to the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Mykola Azarov, with a request to include participation of clergy and faithful of the UGCC in the Divine Liturgy program of the celebrations of the 1000th anniversary of St. Sophia’s Cathedral. The letter states that the UGCC Bishops are concerned that celebrations of the 1000 th anniversary of the Cathedral would be "one-sided, that is, in favor of one confession (the Moscow Patriarchate - UNIAN)." "Because all traditional confessions, which stem from this single root of our Kyiv Christian tradition, have an equal right and duty to participate in the planned festivities," - underlines the letter.
In the address to M. Azarov, it is also pointed out that for all the UGCC faithful, one of the four traditional Ukrainian Churches and heirs of Volodymyr's Baptism, it is also a very special celebration. After all, St. Sophia’s Cathedral is the embodiment of the common Christian roots of the Ukrainian people.
