UGCC Head: “During Great Lent we will especially remember the martyrs of the Heavenly Hundred”

In contemplating the pure sacrifice of the Heavenly Hundred and the dedication of hundreds of thousands of people, each one of us should dream in a different way about our life: to search in our consciousness and our essence the sacramental greatness, to open our life to others--God and our neighbor, to cleanse ourselves of all that weighs us down and leads to sin.

The Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, His Beatitude Sviatoslav (Shevchuk), asks the UGCC faithful and people of goodwill  to contemplate this in his Pastoral Epistle at the beginning of Great Lent.

“Great Lent continues what was born on Maidan and gives it a new spiritual dimension.  During Great Lent  we will especially remember  together with our  deceased parents, the sacrifice of the martyrs of the Heavenly Hundred – those who gave their lives for the victory of good over evil, truth over injustice,” emphasized the hierarch.

He is convinced that this year’s Great Lent in a special manner urges Ukrainians to overcome the sin of hatred and distrust, mainly towards the people who have been entrusted to steer the country’s course.  “It is difficult for us to trust the new government because we have experienced acts of the authorities which enslaves, degrades, and kills.

At the same time, thinks the Church Head, trust of the new government cannot be blind and has to be accompanied with an active responsibility for that which happens in our country.
