UGCC Head on the causes of the coronavirus: We, Christians, believe in a merciful God

When we see a horrible trouble ahead, obviously everyone asks “what have I done to deserve this?” Christians are seeking spiritual answers to this question. As Christians we do not believe in a punishing God. We believe in a merciful God.

The Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church His Beatitude Sviatoslav said this during  during the Open Church program on "Live TV".  His Beatitude Sviatoslav spoke with the co-editor-in-chief of the online publication "Obozrevatel" Orest Sohar.

"Let's talk about the causes of coronavirus, based on scientific data.  There are two theories of the origin of the virus.  One theory talks about it as a result of artificial synthesis, and the other - about various mutations that occurred in nature.  Some say that this is a result of environmental changes that have occurred in nature and our negligent attitude to the environment,” said the Head of the UGCC.

According to His Beatitude Sviatoslav, Jesus Christ who  suffered on the cross, died and rose, reveals to us the face of our loving God.

He agrees with the words of the papal preacher, Father Raniero Cantalamessa, who very aptly said on Good Friday that in the mystery of the death, crucifixion and resurrection of Christ, the Lord God had forever declared Himself an ally of man.

"God is on our side," says the Primate, "especially when we want to overcome evil.  God does not use disease, suffering, and death as some scourge to punish man.  Why?  For Jesus Christ gave Himself to be scourged.  If God suffers with man, then today we can see Him in the sufferings of modern man.  And these were the words of the Pope during a ‘Way of the Cross' service in an empty St. Peter's Square a few days ago."

The Lord will help to find a cure for this virus.  God always supports everything that a person wants to do for the good of another person," says His Beatitude Sviatoslav.
