“Considering the state’s inactivity, the initiative of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church is very urgent and necessary. Workers both abroad and in Ukraine have a difficult time adapting to life. We need a support to save our Ukrainian family. That which is happening in our society we consider genocide, as the destruction of our family,” said Mrs. Oksana Pronyuk, a former migrant worker, author, representative of Pieta community, from Ivano-Frankivsk, speaking about the main theme of the current Synod of Bishops of the UGCC.

Mrs. Pronyuk participated in a confession-evening, which took place on September 3 as part of the work of the synod.  At the event, representatives of Ukrainian work migrants shared their personal experiencing, described the reasons they went abroad, and shared their needs. “We are sincerely grateful to the church which wants to help us, to save our family, to support us spiritually and morally. Today the church is the only institution that cares for migrant workers in abroad and when they return to Ukraine,” Mrs. Oksana said during the event. To help migrant workers and their families, the church set up a Committee on Matters of Migrants of the UGCC. Its tasks include providing professional pastoral and social guardianship of migrants, assisting in developing a structure of self-organization of Ukrainian migrants, and establishing international contacts.
