UGCC Synod of Bishops establishes a Ten-Day Missionary Period in UGCC

A resolution of the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church established a Ten-Day Period of Missionary Activity in UGCC. The Father and Head of the Church, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, informed the Sister Servants of the Immaculate Heart today, August 20th, during a meeting in Rome with their Main Administration and the superiors of the provinces from other countries.

According to the Church Primate, the ten-day period of missionary work falls into the period between Ascension and the Descent of the Holy Spirit. “At first we thought of establishing a Day of Missions in the Church, however our bishops decided that one day was too short since it is important to talk with people more about sharing their faith.  This will be the time when we will focus on the issues of the necessity of missionary efforts.  We need to learn more about areas where our people are who need God’s Word,” explained His Beatitude Sviatoslav.

Simultaneously, UGCC Synod of Bishops also decided that during this time there will be a collection of donations for the missions so that each eparchy or exarchate can have their own missionary fund for catechizing, implementing new programs for youth, etc…

“If there is a fund in every eparchy and exarchate, then a general all-church missionary fund will be established under the guardianship of Bishop Petro (Stasiuk),” stated UGCC Head.

In discussing the issue of why our society needs missionary work, a new evangelization, His Beatitude told the nuns that the Ukrainian society needs a Church today which would be active in social services.  “This is a colossal effort in which one can carry into society Christ’s Gospel.  When we perform some act of mercy, we do not question whether the receiver is a believer or not, whether s/he is Orthodox, or some other confession.  We serve everyone.  And on the basis of such sincere service one can overcome certain prejudices and discover the real Christ,” argues the Primate.

He informed all that right now the post-Synodal epistle is being prepared and it will summarize all the resolutions and projects approved by the Synod of Bishops, held August 11-17 in Kyiv.
