Due to the assistance of UGCC Commission on Justice and Peace, the Ukrainian and Russian translations of the book Vocation of a Business Leader: A Reflection have appeared. The Annual Publishers Book Forum in Lviv (September 12-15) offered an opportunity to present the book to a wide circle of readers.

“These are difficult times for the world economy, during which many business men and women have suffered the consequences of crises that deeply reduced the income of their enterprises, risked their survival, and threatened many jobs. Nevertheless, the Church maintains the hope that Christian business leaders will, despite the present darkness, restore trust, inspire hope, and keep burning the light of faith that fuels their daily pursuit of the good. Indeed, it is worth recalling that Christian faith is not only the light that burns in the heart of believers but also the propulsive force of human history.”  With these words of thoughtfulness and hope, the Head of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, Cardinal Peter K.A. Turkson, characterizes in the Foreword the relevance of the new publication.

This book proposes many interesting and significant principles of business activity in the light of Christian teaching.  Among these, notably, there is a discussion on how “business leaders have to move the current economical and financial world into the light of the principles of human dignity and the common good.”

The main chapters cover the topics of current challenges and possibilities in the sphere of business, the importance of ethical social principles, fundamental ethical principles for business, as well as “Six Practical Principles of Business” and an examination of conscience for the business leader.   Vocation of the Business Leader is a publication of the Pontifical Council of Justice and Peace about the “vocation” of entrepreneurs who work in a wide a wide range of business institutions: cooperatives, multinational corporations, family businesses, social businesses, for-profit/non-profit collaborations, etc. – and the challenges and possibilities that the business world offers them in terms of intense technological communications, short-term financial practices, and profound cultural changes.
