“We can learn something from our Muslim brethren” - His Beatitude Sviatoslav

In answering a question whether there is something to be learned from the Muslims during an interview for Hazeta po-ukrainsky, UGCC Primate, His Beatitude Sviatoslav (Shevchuk), stated that both Orthodox and Catholics can learn something from our Muslim brethren. Especially, His Beatitude Sviatoslav believes that we can learn how not to compromise on issues dealing with secularization of society.

“Western society is losing a sense of the supernatural while the Muslim world is not.  In their lives religion holds a prominent place,” thinks UGCC Head.

In his opinion, a second lesson lies in learning not to be afraid of expressing one’s faith – akin to the way that the Muslims do this.  “It has to be admitted that sometimes Christians in their everyday life are ashamed of their faith.  Then there emerges a certain separation – a dichotomy: in church we piously and ostentatiously pray, but once we leave the church we live as if God did not exist... Our faith often does not influence our daily life.  Therefore, maybe we should be less compromising -- not to be ashamed of being Christians,” is the Primate’s conviction.

A third lesson worth learning -- especially concerns categorical youth – “we cannot engage in compromises or agreements with evil.”

“If we shut our eyes to the evil, thinks UGCC Head, done by me, my brother or our politicians, then we become collaborators.  Therefore categoricalness can be expressed in such a concept as              jihad.  Although in our case we have to properly understand this word.  By declaring war on all that is evil in us and in our society -- we will be good Christians,” stated His Beatitude Sviatoslav.
