Day of Judaism will be celebrated in Ukraine for the first time

UGCC Commission for Promoting Christian Unity initiated the celebration of a Day of Judaism in Ukraine which will take place on January 17, 2013. The location of this first celebration will be in Odesa – a city in which at the beginning of the 20th century there resided the third largest Jewish community of the world (after New York and Warsaw) and in which today, as previously, the Jewish community plays an important role, according to Rev. Ihor Shaban, head of UGCC Commission for Promoting Christian Unity.

Partners in realizing the Day of Judaism in Odesa are the charitable organization Caritas-Odesa UGCC and the European Institute of Social Communications with the assistance of the Odesa region charity fund Maybutnist [The Future] , the cultural-charitable center Bavarian House Odesa and the Stanislav Shulminsky  School of the Lay Apostolate.

The initiative to celebrate Day of Judaism was supported by:  Bishop Vasyl (Ivasiuk), UGCC Exarch of Odesa- Crimea;  Bishop Bronislaw Bernacki, Ordinate of  Odesa-Crimea Eparchy of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine;  Bishop Uland Spahlinger, Head of the German Evangelical -Lutheran Church in Ukraine.

Day of Judaism Program in Odesa:

12:00 - Christian ministers visit Odesa Synagogue Chabad Shomrei Shabbos, meeting with the Chief Rabbi of Odesa -Southern Ukraine,  Avraham Wolff.

13.00 — Opening of the exhibit: "People of the Book" (House of Angels, 51 Pushkin St. )

15.00 — Opening of the exhibit:  “Righteous of the World” (Bavarian House, 60 Uspenska St.)

18.00 — Prayer for peace and well-being in Jewish synagogues and Christian churches in Odesa
