On November 11, 2019, Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, met with the Foreign Minister of Austria Alexander Schallenberg during his visit to this country.

At the meeting, the Head of the UGCC thanked for the support of Ukraine and its territorial integrity. He also expressed gratitude for the consistent mediation mission carried out by Austria in order to stop Russia's military aggression against Ukraine.

“We very much appreciated his (the Minister's -ed.) gesture of a visit first to Ukraine and then to St. Petersburg. Because it is a clear diplomatic signal in support of our state,” said His Beatitude Sviatoslav in a comment to the UGCC Information Department.

The parties also spoke about the role of the Church, "to do everything for the healing of wounds caused by the war, to heal all possible relationships between people, and, obviously, to consolidate the Ukrainian people who wish to see our country as part of the European community of nations."

On the same day, the Head of the UGCC also met with members of the Christian Democratic Party of the Austrian Parliament, Dr Gudrun Kugler, chairman of the human rights committee, and Norbert Sieber, chairman of the committee responsible for family policy. The meeting was held at the request of the MPs.

"First of all, we talked about Christian values in politics. They said that a truly successful state should adopt the experience of the social teaching of the Church, that Christians should be active in politics and contribute to the building of a just society,” said His Beatitude.
