Most important challenge for theology in Ukraine is to understand and open to the world

In December, a professor of religious studies and theology Fr. Dr. Myroslaw Tataryn (St. Jerome’s University, Waterloo, Canada) gave a series of lectures to theology students and professors of UCU.

For master’s students the professor gave a special course “Theology and Method”: “UCU students are well prepared and serious about further research,” Fr. Myroslaw shares his observations.

Fr. Dr. Myroslaw Tataryn also gave public lectures for UCU professors about the formation of Eastern Catholic theology and the state of Eastern Catholic Churches after the Second Vatican Council, including the formation and development of the theology of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

“During the special course ‘Theology and Method’ we focused on the notion of who is a well-trained theologian. This is someone who deliberately undertakes academic work, but also understands and knows his faith, and thus there is integration between science and faith. Theological work is, in fact, the work of this interaction,” said the professor.

Writing theological works, according to the priest, should be done critically, and one should be ready to learn more about oneself, one’s own limitations, and use scientific and spiritual resources.“I think the most important issue facing theology in Ukraine is to understand and open to theology in the broader context. You need to enter the global discourse and understand that many stereotypes and paradigms that are used in Ukraine are already outdated and need to be modernized,” advised the professor.

The guest professor lived in UCU Collegium, where he had the opportunity to talk with students and the community of the University: “The idea of the collegium is extremely good. For me, as an observer from outside, it is interesting that the collegium’s chapel is open, that it has no door – this is a big positive,” he said.
