Representatives of the UGCC participate in formation course for military chaplains held in Vatican

Dicastery for promoting integral human development organizes a Formation course for military chaplain with a focus on the topic of protection persons deprived of freedom during armed conflicts.

“Loss of liberty in situations of armed conflicts. Mission of military chaplains” is a theme of a Formation course on International humanitarian law for military chaplains held in October 29-31, 2019 in The Patristic Institute Augustinianum. This course was introduced by Dicastery for promoting integral human development in cooperation with the Congregation for Bishops and the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. It belongs to those events, which the Holy See was bind to lead, participating in 32nd International conference of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent Movements in 2015.

Representatives of the Ukrainian Greek – Catholic Church are bishop Mykhail Koltun, Head of the UGCC Department for military chaplaincy and Fr. Andriy Zelinskyy, S.J., Deputy Head of the Department for military chaplaincy.

The aim of the formation course is to facilitate deeper realization of military chaplains’ mission in terms of protection persons deprived of freedom during armed conflicts in the light of the contemporary challenges of international humanitarian law, in the context of military conflicts, in the situations of extreme vulnerability and in cases of being held in captivity executed by non-governmental bodies.

More than one hundred thirty seven countries worldwide take part in discussions and plenary sessions, during which delegates from the Red Cross Movement, UN, armed forces and international organizations, militaries ordinaries from different countries and lectors from universities.

An audience with Pope Francis is arranged for  Thursday, October 31. The round table discussion dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Geneva Convention from August 12, 1949 is planned to be held in the same afternoon. The participants are prefect of the Dicastery for promoting integral human development cardinal Peter Turkson, bishop Paul Gallagher, the secretary responsible for relations with states within the Holy See's Secretariat of State, ambassadors of the Holy See and others.
