Saturday morning, His Beatitude Sviatoslav (Shevchuk), the Head of the UGCC, presided at the Divine Liturgy near the Tomb of the Apostle Peter at the Vatican (at the Chapel of Pope St. Clement VIII). Joining the Primate of the UGCC in prayer for a Sovereign Ukraine, were the Ambassadors to the Holy See from Ukraine - Tetiana Izhevska, and Poland - Piotr Nowina-Konopka.

In his homily, His Beatitude Sviatoslav stated that, “Standing at the Tomb of the holy Apostle Peter, we sense that the principal master of history is the Lord God, and not presidents, politicians, diplomats, not even the power of weaponry. The future of all peoples is held in the hands of God Himself. Beside Him stands the chief of the Apostles Peter, whose special intercession we implore for Ukraine today.”

He reminded those present that on Saturday, the UGCC prays for the innocent people killed on the Maidan square, “Alas, with every day their number grows. We ask the Lord God, to grant rest to their souls and that the number of those killed would not grow.

Following the Liturgy, all those present made their way to the Tomb of St. Peter, joined their hands as a sign of the unity of Ukraine, and prayed for peace in Ukraine.

[The Head of the UGCC is presently at the Vatican for an official visit with Pope Francis. A private audience is planned for Monday, March 17th.]
