“Today the Christ’s Church celebrates its Birthday. Today we, being people of God, His children receive a great gift of Pentecost. Today, just as it was in Jerusalem, we are experiencing the fullness of grace coming from the Life-giving Spirit”, mentioned the Major Archbishop at the beginning of his homily, delivered on the feast of Pentecost at the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Kyiv.

This New Testament event of Pentecost has its pre-history, as it was mentioned by the Head of the Church. Mainly, the new command of the Holy Ghost is not a judgment. On the contrary, it is a justification and salvation. That Law has no reason for fear but for joy”.

The Holy Spirit, the preacher emphasized, helps us in our weakness and intercedes for us through wordless groans.

“He is our intercessor, our advocate, who excuses us before God, who lifts up and comforts us. That is why we call him Comforter”, said the Father and Head of the Church.

In his point of view, the key to comprehending the Mystery of Pentecost, which abides constantly in the heart and within a Church community, is words of Isaiah the Prophet: “Comfort, comfort my people; speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for”.

The Head of the Church emphasized that the Holy Spirit we receive as a gift today is our Comforter. Only He is able to console a modern man in his hardships.

Citing the words of the metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky “it is in our free will to change ourselves”, the preacher said that this word “will” does not only mean a desire. The word “will” means the presence of the power of the Holy Spirit in me, who can change my life. The same Holy Spirit which transformed uneducated shepherds into God bearing prophets and petrified disciples, staying in Jerusalem, He turned into apostles. Empowered with the Holy Spirit they went to the big word, proclaiming the Gospel in various languages. The same old news about the power of God’s love which is served to everyone who believes”, explained the Head of the UGCC.
