UGCC together with the Jewish community of Ukraine is going to release Metropolitan Andrey (Sheptytsky) Medal

This year the Jewish community in Ukraine in cooperation with UGCC founded a special decoration- Metropolitan Andrey (Sheptytsky) Medal ,which people, who contributed to Ukrainian- Jewish reconciliation, will be decorated with.

Today, on November the 1st, the day of the death of Metropolitan Andrey ( Sheptytsky), it was announced by Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, His Beatitude  Sviatoslav (Shevchuk) during a sermon at the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection.

The Primate of UGCC recalled that Metropolitan Andrey at his day, showed himself in relations with other faiths and nationalities.

"He corresponded with thousands of people , talking to different people in the East and the West, including the Orthodox hierarchy beyond Zbruch. And then, when the crucible of revolution and civil war expatriate from their episcopal centres , former opponents found retreat and open doors at St. George Mountain in the chambers of Metropolitan Andrey. Glorious Anthony Khrapovytsky, who never displayed too much favour of the idea of ​​Ukrainian Local Church , the opponent of Metropolitan Andrey , saw a great  man who opened him his hospitable home "- said the preacher.

He also recalled that Andrey (Sheptytsky) knew Hebrew .

He tells that Jewish community discovers his letters and is deeply impressed that he not only wrote the exquisite language of their community at the time , but also used the quotations of their spiritual leaders and thinkers of the Jewish community of that time.

"Metropolitan Andrey was a prophet of his time, the prophet of unity between churches, between nations, between world religions. A person who has managed to remain a great spirit and construct a new face of the Church of the twentieth century on this basis at the time when people are losing human likeness in crucible of World Wars " , - the Head of UGCC.
