Pope’s visitation and his words about real freedom, that Ukraine is a European state with European history and culture were certain precursors to the Orange Revolution, hence the Revolution of Dignity. And those principles proclaimed by him were heard. The Head of the UGCC said in his interview to ICTV on the occasion of the visit to Ukraine of Saint Pope John Paul II.

The first official visit of Pope remains historic, and his words said in 2001 to government officials in Ukraine, cultural and religious figures, as well as Ukrainian youth will always be a guideline to the development of a democratic state and enhancement, the Head of the UGCC assumes.

His Beatitude Sviatoslav recalls three precious values of real democracy, put forward by His Holiness John Paul II, which are: acknowledgment of higher values, respect for human dignity and the third one is – power must minister all, from the most vulnerable to those in greatest need.

The Pope called businessmen to care not for revenue but for a person. “The Pope saw this moral deprivation and spoke it out very clearly”, the Head of the Church underlined.

Addressing the then politicians, His Holiness explained what political power means. “Power is ministering. I warn you to care for the narrow view of corporate and personal needs”.

Appealing to young people the Pope emphasized that real freedom is demanding, far too demanding than slavery, and related to responsibility. “The Pope indicated that the right road to freedom lies in 10 Commandments”, the Head of the Church recalls.

Last but not least is that the prophetic words of the Pontiff were about Ukraine: “Ukraine is what you will build”. His Beautitude Sviatoslav says that some experts called the words of the Pope “state-forming” ones, declaring that these words meant that not political or governmental institutions are the promoters of all changes in a country, but youth are its driven force, who can and must build the country they want to live in”, explains the Head of the Church.
